Armas Järnefelt (1869-1958) - Symphonic Fantasy _ Suite in E flat major _ Serenade - PREMIERE

Armas Järnefelt (1869-1958)

Symphonic Fantasy

Suite in E flat major

Serenade

PREMIERE

Description: Järnefelt never wrote a symphony but his 1895 Fantasy contains music intended for one. Lasting 21 minutes, this is often Germanic in feel with plain influences from both Wagner and Richard Strauss yet still manages to have moments of nationalist character. The 30-minute Serenade of 1893 is the composer's earliest orchestral work and its six movements were written while he was a student of Massenet in Paris; eloquent, with both French influences as well as a dance-like finale referring to Grieg and Dvorák, this work is a good companion to Stenhammar's Serenade. The 21-minute suite (1897), perhaps in response to strong criticism of Järnefelt's early attachement to Wagner, traffics pleasingly in the Russian romantics with a Mendelssohnian scherzo. Lahti Symphony Orchestra; Jaakko Kuusisto (violin).
